types of transportation

Less Than Truckload (LTL) Basics & Benefits

A very common form of transportation, when it's not large enough to fill an entire truck

  • Less than 10,000 pounds
  • Typical LTL shipment- 1-6 skids or less than 12 linear ft. of trailer
  • Doesn't require the space of a full truckload
  • LTL moves w/many other shipments hence this saves money by you only paying for the portion of the truck your freight uses.
  • Packaging & labeling of these shipments is very important to ensure timely & arriving in tact with little to no damage.

Truckload (TL) Basics & Benefits

Filling the semi-trailer to capacity or if you prefer a dedicated trailer, this is your mode

  • Having enough freight to fill an entire trailer
  • Typical T/L shipment- 26-30 skids & approx. 42,000 pounds
  • You need a dedicated trailer for your shipment
  • Your pickup & delivery dates/times are not flexible
  • Faster transit times than other types of transit, usually one pick up & delivery
  • Less risk of damage as the freight is not moved after being loaded
  • Many types of trucks for this mode, dry vans, reefers (refrigerated) & flatbeds

Partial Truckload Basics & Benefits

If it's to big for LTL but you don't want to pay for a full truckload, this is the best mode

  • Best partial size shipment- 6 to 8 pallets & or 8,000 to 27,500 pounds
  • Benefits of cost savings as you only pay for the space your freight uses

Parcel Shipping Basics

Parcel  shipments refer to the shipping of lighter, smaller boxed items. Parcel means packages that weigh 100 pounds or less & can be moved  without assistance. By shipping a few small packages at a time,  this is an economical way to move your products.

Intermodal Basics

An excellent alternate way to move your freight via rail if you have flexibility

  • If your shipment weighs under 43,000 pounds
  • If your shipment has a flexible transit schedule
  • If you shipment can be loaded into a container/trailer up to 53' long
  • If your shipment travels more than 500 miles

This is a great mode of transportation to explore if you fit into these categories!
